HELP SUPPORT US

Northern Nevada Literacy Council is a duly register non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Our primary source of funding is through competitive grant applications with Title II of the Workforce Investment Act and the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act. This meets 88% of our annual budget needs. The remaining 12% is met through NNLC’s fund raising efforts.

NNLC is here for our community, our businesses and our residents. Your support helps us continue offering these services.

Thank you for your interest in Northern Nevada Literacy Council (NNLC).

Our mission is to help adult learners achieve their educational and career goals. NNLC leads the state adult education program with adults who obtain their high school equivalency and go on to college, trainings and better paying jobs. NNLC’s other programs include the Family Reading Program funded by the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, foundations, and donations, remove endorsed by the Learn & Earn Program endorsed by Nevadaworks for 16- to 24- year-olds and English as a Second Language and Citizenship Classes.

This is what you can make happen with a grant of $1,000 to $10,000:

  • A grant of $1,000 sponsors five students in workforce soft skills training in preparation for job interviews and college entrance essays. This amount also sponsors 20 families in the Family Reading Program or provides funding for 10 students to take the High School Equivalency Exam.

  • A grant of $2,500 sponsors five students in the JumpStart orientation program. During orientation, students are introduced to the NNLC program, assessed in Math and Language Arts and are then offered one-on-one advisement based on their career and educational goals with our Career Pathway Manager.

  • A grant of $5,000 sponsors one student in achieving their High School Equivalency. This includes all the materials, resources and technology from assessment and Adult Basic Education classes levels 1 through 3 and the exam itself, which students must pass to obtain their certification. Many NNLC students are financially unable to take the HSE because of the exam fee.

  • A grant of $10,000 sponsors a remote JumpStart program onsite at an employer’s place of business. This allows employers to offer education resources for their employees. This serves employers to add a benefit to employees and serves employees who do not have to travel to take classes — we offer them the orientation onsite and then enroll them in an online program through NNLC. Expanding beyond our confined location would provide the opportunity to reach more students and make a greater impact on other low-income areas in Northern Nevada. Employers such as Panasonic require a High School Equivalency to promote within the business so partnerships with these employers offer mutual benefits for NNLC, area employers and employees.

Our current funding priorities are:

  1. Establishing scholarships for student High School Equivalency exams.
  2. Applying technology enhancements to implement the onsite JumpStart orientation program and to equip classrooms.
  3. Securing a partner with space to accommodate graduation ceremonies. NNLC has outgrown our space for families and friends to celebrate this special occasion for students.
