Northern Nevada Literacy Council (NNLC) in Reno, Nevada received a $7,000 Community Fund grant from the Community Foundation of Western Nevada.

NNLC is a community-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adult learners complete and achieve further goals in education and family literacy. NNLC has developed a literacy project that aims to increase the number of children in northern Nevada who read proficiently by working with children and their parents. The Family Reading Program (FRP) of NNLC is an important community program that reinforces the literacy instruction children receive at school and incorporates literacy techniques into home learning. The children are learning vital literacy skills to carry through their school years and into adulthood.

“This funding will put books in the hands of children,” said Jennifer Oliver, Interim Executive Director, “all of which supports a literate and engaged community.”

For the past 2 years, NNLC holds the honor of graduating the most High School Equivalency (HSE) adults in the state of Nevada. While NNLC works with adults, the FRP supports families, too.   As a partner in the Reading Coalition, NNCL shares the goal that all 3rd graders read at grade level by 2020. The FRP has provided its services in Washoe, Churchill, Elko, and Humboldt counties with the aim of accomplishing that milestone.
