The Northern Nevada Literacy Council’s first scholarship fund has been established thanks to the support of two of Northern Nevada Literacy Council’s longtime supporters.

John and Karin Jelavich donated $100,000 in August 2018 to NNLC to assist Northern Nevada adults achieve their academic and vocational goals.

“We really love the mission here and the fact that the students that are here are here of their own volition, which means they’re going to try harder than most to get their equivalent of the GED and then go on to a trade school or college or a better life, hopefully,” Karin Jelavich said during a check presentation to the NNLC.

The scholarship fund will be used to assist students with tuition or vocational training as they’re pursuing professional certifications at the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College or through other training programs. Donations are applied to exams students must take to complete their requirements, the technology that provides the curriculum for students and other supplies.

The Jelaviches said the donation is a means of ensuring better outcomes in the community for those wanting to improve their personal situation. They have endowed scholarships to other community organizations, including UNR.
“We want results,” Karin Jelavich said. “We want students to not be on the streets but to have a better life, and whatever we can do to help, we will.”

NNLC thanks KTVN Channel 2 for covering this donation presentation on Aug. 24 at NNLC’s facility in Reno. Check out their video clip here.
